Title sums it up.What is the greatest highlight in football history (college or not)?
Hail FlutieWhat is the greatest highlight in football history (college or not)?
The immaculate reception! It occurred in the AFC divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 23, 1972. NFL Films has chosen it as the greatest play of all time. The play was a turning point for the Steelers, who reversed four decades of futility with their first playoff win ever, and went on to win four Super Bowls in the following six seasons.
The Pittsburgh Steelers trailed the Oakland Raiders 7-6, facing fourth-and-10 on their own 40-yard line with 22 seconds remaining in the game and no time-outs. Head coach Chuck Noll called a pass play, 66 Circle Option, intended for receiver Barry Pearson, a rookie who was playing in his first NFL game. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, unable to find Pearson while avoiding two Raiders defenders, threw the ball to the Raiders' 35-yard line, toward fullback John ';Frenchy'; Fuqua. Raiders safety Jack Tatum collided with Fuqua just as the ball arrived. Tatum's hit knocked Fuqua to the ground and sent the ball sailing backward several yards, end over end. Steelers running back Franco Harris, after initially blocking on the play, had run downfield in case Bradshaw needed another eligible receiver. He scooped up the sailing ball just before it hit the ground, and ran the rest of the way downfield to score the touchdown that gave the Steelers a 12-7 lead and the game
';The Band Is On the Field!'; Cal-Stanford 1981
That is the greatest football highlight ever. It added the drama of a last- second kickoff with an improbable gaffe that added humor. My wife saw that for the first time ever the other day(She's a recent American Football fan), and yelled, ';Oh! My God!'; before laughing.
The Immaculate Reception.
Not only because it was a completely crazy, improbable play that probably opened the door to the Steelers' dynasty of the 70s, but it also has the best nickname.
Seriously, ';The Play';? ';The Catch';? Boring.
';The Immaculate Reception'; is reverential and almost religious. The kind of moment that creates and entirely new sense of faith. The belief that worshipping in the House of Steeler will lead not only to heaven on earth, but also eternal bliss.
STEELER NATION .... REPRESENT!!!!!
The one with all the laterals, and then the marching band comes onto the field at what they thought was the end of the game, but the play is continuing, and eventually the ball carrier makes it into the endzone through a crowd of fans and bandmembers who are on the field, and he plows into a trombone player...and scores.

I would have to go with the Statute of Liberty play Boise State pulled off against Oklahome to win the game. Had the missed teh play, they would have lost. It was great call and great execution by the team. Flutie's Miracle in Miami comes a close second, but BC matched up better against Miami than Boise St against Oklahoma.
Hail Flutie.
Cal/Stanford is completely overblown because nobody ever tries it. Michigan came within a few yards of repeating it against Nebraska in a bowl game a couple years ago, and a Div-3 team totally trumped it this year.
Johnny Rodgers punt return against Oklahoma in the Game Of The Century 1971. There were a couple of glaring un-called clips on the play, but what the hell.
Runner up- Flutie's Hail Mary
Runner up II - Stanford/Cal
I can't find a highlight anywhere, but when Byron Leftwich was being carried down the field by two offensive linemen, I was completely awestruck.
